The best mental calculators from all over the world are invited to the 3rd Mental Calculation World Cup 2008. It will take place at the Unversity of Leipzig as part of the "Summer of Science" festival, the central event in the Year of Mathematics, as announced by the Federal Ministry for Research.

Date: 29 June - 1 July 2008

Venue: University of Leipzig, Germany

Schedule and rules: The World Cup will take place at 1 July, where each mental calculator will have to solve tasks in different categories (addition of ten 10-digit numbers, multiplication of two 8-digit numbers, extracting the square root from a 6-digit number, calculating the day of the week and surprise tasks). There are several prizes for the best participants. The overall winner will be awarded the title "World Cup winner for mental calculation".

All the competitions are about straight mental calculation without any aid. Registrations from calculation experts using the Abacus / Soroban are welcome either. In case there are sufficient registrations for this category, there will be an additional competition where the use of these aids is permitted.

Prizes: Prizes will be awarded for the best participants in the total competition as well as in the single categories (except the surprise tasks). The winners will receive a certification, which attests the title "World Cup Winner". Successful record attempts will be kept as world record in the Book of Alternative Records.

Organizer: The world cup will be organized by the Chair of Applied Telematics and E-Business at the University of Leipzig together with the association Science in Dialog.

sample task sheets	Sample tasks sheets are available from the previous events 2004 and 2006.
For viewing PDF files, you need Acrobat Reader, that can be downloaded for free at www.adobe.com. For viewing the RTF files, you need a text processor such as Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, StarOffice or WordPerfect. For reading the RTF file "detailed rules", the program Microsoft Formula Editor or MathType need to be installed as well. This is the case if you have a full installation of Microsoft Word.
